Employee Spotlight: Kevin Nelson

This month, we’re pleased to spotlight Kevin Nelson, a Community Liaison with our Albuquerque, New Mexico office. Kevin has been a part of the Giving Home team for nearly three years and has built a reputation for going above and beyond to ensure patients feel supported, informed, and genuinely cared for.

Kevin has always been driven by a desire to help others. Before joining Giving Home, he spent close to 10 years working at a retirement community, starting at the front desk and eventually working his way up to business office manager. It was a role he loved (“It was like working with a whole bunch of grandmas and grandpas,” he recalls) and allowed him to connect with residents in a meaningful way. When he came across an ad for Giving Home, he knew he wanted to give it a shot.

Kevin first joined Giving Home as a Case Manager, diving in quickly to learn about the programs and processes. He was a little intimidated at first but knew “if I put my mind to it, I could do it.” Through hands-on experience and support from his team, he transitioned into a Community Liaison role, where he found his true passion. Today, he finds fulfillment in being a resource for patients and families, stepping in when something is missed, easing concerns, and making sure people feel supported every step of the way. He especially values the opportunity to work with Giving Home’s unique patient population — individuals who worked in the nuclear weapons industry and the Department of Energy. In his eyes, they hold a similar status to our nation’s veterans. “They’ve done a huge part in defending this country,” he says, “and helping them is a great way to give back.”

As a Community Liaison, every day looks a little different. While he spends most of his time in the office, Kevin also makes it a priority to travel to patients’ homes a few days each week, sometimes driving several hours to get there. Phone calls can be efficient, but he finds that face-to-face visits allow for deeper connection and understanding. Being in the home gives Kevin a clearer picture of what patients are truly experiencing and ways Giving Home can better support, whether through services, resources, or home modifications.

Part of Kevin’s role also involves supporting patients who may be considering transferring away their home health care service. For him, these conversations are rooted in respect and transparency. While patients ultimately guide their own healthcare choices, Kevin wants them to feel confident that Giving Home always has their best interests at heart: “It doesn’t take much to give someone a five-minute phone call or offer a little direction.” He shares a memorable story of a patient who had transferred to another provider recently returned to Giving Home — and for an entire year, Kevin stayed in touch, checking in to make sure she was getting what she needed. One day over coffee, she told him she was ready to come back. For Kevin, it wasn’t just about getting another patient; it was about showing her that Giving Home genuinely valued her well-being, regardless of where she was receiving care.

In the last three years, Kevin has learned a lot about the EEOICPA and RECA programs and how they help people. That knowledge has equipped him both professionally and personally. As an Albuquerque native, he’s noticed just how many people in New Mexico worked at the labs; whether he’s wearing his Giving Home hat in public or simply picks up on a relevant conversation, he’s always ready to talk and help people understand what’s available to them. This role has also sharpened Kevin’s time management skills and taught him how to stay productive while on the road visiting patients.

Reflecting on his time here, he doesn’t hesitate to share how much Giving Home means to him. Kevin recalls the way team members are willing to collaborate with each other and how leadership listens to employee feedback and implements meaningful changes. “I have never worked for a company that seems to care about their employees as much as this company does. Not just the employees, but the patients, too.”

Outside of work, Kevin has been married to his wife for 17 years; they have two kids — a 20-year-old daughter and a 16-year-old son. The family recently upgraded from tent camping to a camper and has been making the most of it, exploring the great outdoors together. He also enjoys hunting and fishing whenever he gets the chance.

Thank you, Kevin, for your compassion and commitment to our patients. We’re proud you’re part of the Giving Home family!
