This month, we’re excited to spotlight Alfredo Ramirez, Jr., a Patient Coordinator in our Denver office. Alfredo’s nearly five-year journey at Giving Home has been a story of continuous growth. He’s held multiple roles across different departments, and each one has deepened his expertise, sharpened his skills, and reinforced his passion for helping patients access the care they deserve.
Before joining Giving Home, Alfredo spent seven years at Chick-fil-A, including time in management. He loved the work but was ready for a change. After a brief role as a delivery driver for Amazon, his sister-in-law encouraged him to apply for a position at Giving Home. He was hired for a front desk role, where he supported the Growth department by following up on letters, handling medical record requests, and answering phones.
It was in that front desk role that Alfredo spotted an opportunity to go above and beyond. He noticed an individual who didn’t have enough evidence to support their claim and decided to try writing a causation letter himself. He researched and worked on it during his downtime, building the strongest case possible. “I just refused to believe we couldn’t help her,” he shares. Thanks to Alfredo’s letter, the claim was eventually approved; that moment also launched his journey from the front desk into a technical writing position. After a year or two, Alfredo transitioned to admissions, where he discovered a love for interacting with patients. When his responsibilities were moved to another team, Alfredo wasn’t discouraged. He simply asked, “What’s next?” That question led him to the billing department, and eventually to his current role as a Patient Coordinator, where all his diverse experiences come together.
As a Patient Coordinator, Alfredo’s days start with creating a solid game plan. He stays on top of important dates for visits, referrals, and deadlines that keep patient claims on track. Some days involve driving out to meet individuals face-to-face; others are filled with phone calls. Over his five years with Giving Home, Alfredo has honed his time management and communication skills. When pitching the program benefits to patients and doctors, he strives to be clear, confident, and compelling. “I even practice in the mirror,” he laughs. “My wife has heard my spiel so many times! But for me, it’s easy to pitch something, especially when you believe in it.”
Alfredo’s favorite part of the job is getting to know patients and their stories, especially about their time at DOE or nuclear sites. “Sure, I can talk somebody’s ear off,” he shares, “but I’m a good listener as well.” While younger generations may not always show interest in those experiences, Alfredo is genuinely curious. He knows that these moments bring them joy while also providing insights that help him serve future patients better.
Alfredo loves a good puzzle and often views individual cases with the same critical eye. Recently, he was talking with a patient who was hesitant about beginning home health care. “My gears were turning, and I asked him, hey, do you have any past medical bills for testing?” When Alfredo shared that he could help with the reimbursement paperwork, the patient’s hesitancy turned to excitement. Another memory that still stands out vividly is that very first causation letter he wrote from the front desk. His determination to find a solution paid off, and to this day, the patient remains grateful for the care she receives through Giving Home. She wrote Alfredo a sticky note that he keeps as a reminder of why this work matters so much. “This job isn’t necessarily about clocking in for 40 hours. We get to make an impact on individual lives and help them access a lot of opportunities.”
When it comes to company culture, Alfredo appreciates that leadership genuinely listens to employees. In previous jobs, employee surveys felt like a formality. At Giving Home, it’s different. “Our leadership was like, ‘we heard you guys, and here is what’s going to change.’ I was blown away. What other company will stick to their word and actually listen?” Alfredo’s advice to his colleagues? Never be afraid to speak up or try something new, whether it’s a new idea, skill, or position. “If you’re curious about an opportunity, just ask. Give it a trial run. You never know when the next opportunity is right in front of you.”
Outside of work, Alfredo is a die-hard Colorado Avalanche fan. When he’s not rewatching episodes of Friends or other favorite shows, he’s watching hockey games or attending them in person with his wife and young son. He also treasures time with family, friends, and his grandparents, with whom he’s extremely close. For Alfredo, each day is an exciting opportunity filled with challenges to tackle, new skills to learn, and meaningful interactions with patients. Thank you for your curiosity and unwavering commitment. We’re proud you’re part of the Giving Home family!
