Radiation Exposure Compensation Act

Created to protect the interests of former or current employees who contracted certain types of cancer as a result of exposure to aboveground radiation or exposure to uranium mines. RECA provides prompt fixed compensation and benefits to Downwinders, Onsite Participants, Uranium Millers, Miners, and Ore Transporters.

RECA includes two sections: Section 4 and Section 5, which outline the employment types available for claim filing.

  • Section 4 Includes:
    • Downwinders
    • Onsite Participants
  • Section 5 Includes:
    • Uranium Millers
    • Uranium Miners
    • Ore Transporters

It is important to keep in mind that eligibility for RECA may affect eligibility for compensation through EEOICPA. For example, if individuals accept compensation through RECA Section 4, they are not eligible to receive payments through EEOICPA for cancer.

RECA provides lump sum compensation to those who contracted specific diseases and were employed in covered occupations.

  • Up to $100,000 for Uranium workers
  • Up to $75,000 for Onsite Participants who were present during atomic weapons tests
  • Up to $50,000 for Downwinders who were present downwind of the Nevada Test Site
